WHAT DOES HALLOWEEN REALLY MEAN?

 WHAT DOES HALLOWEEN REALLY MEAN?

The Origin, History and Meaning of Halloween

The word Halloween is derived from the old English expression “All Hallows' Eve.”

  • Hallow means holy or saint.

  • Eve means the evening before a special day.

  • All Hallows' Day means All Saints' Day, observed on November 1.

  • All Hallows' Eve means the evening before All Saints' Day, October 31.

Over time, All Hallows' Eve became Halloween.

Where did Halloween originate?

Halloween has two important historical backgrounds.

Samhain – Ancient Celtic Festival

  • Ancient Celtic communities celebrated a festival called Samhain around October 31.

  • It marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

  • Some people believed that the boundary between the living and the dead became thin during this time.

  • Bonfires, costumes and supernatural beliefs were associated with the festival.

All Saints' Day – Christian Observance

  • Christians established a day to remember and honour saints and martyrs.

  • November 1 became widely observed as All Saints' Day in the Western Church.

  • October 31 became known as All Hallows' Eve.

  • Over the centuries, older folk customs and Christian traditions became mixed with Halloween celebrations.

How is modern Halloween celebrated?

Today, Halloween is commonly associated with:
  • Jack-o'-lanterns and carved pumpkins.

  • Ghosts, witches and skeletons.

  • Trick-or-treating and costumes.

  • Horror themes, supernatural imagery and scary decorations.

Not every person who celebrates Halloween believes in occult practices; for many, it is simply a cultural or recreational event.

What should Christians understand?

The Bible does not directly mention Halloween, but it clearly teaches us to distinguish between light and darkness.

  • Deuteronomy 18:10–12 - Stay away from witchcraft and occult practices.
  • Ephesians 5:11 - Have no fellowship with the works of darkness.
  • Romans 12:2 -Do not conform to this world.
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:22 - Abstain from every form of evil.
  • 1 Corinthians 10:31 - Do everything for the glory of God.

Halloween literally means the evening before All Saints' Day. It does not literally mean a festival of evil or demons. However, its historical influences and many modern practices involve themes that Christians should carefully evaluate.

We should not judge a celebration by its name alone, but by its meaning, activities and spiritual influence.

Our calling is not to celebrate darkness but to walk in the light of Christ.

The important question is not just, "What does Halloween mean?" but "Does the way I celebrate it honor the Lord Jesus Christ?"
