ABBA, FATHER!
ABBA, FATHER!
One Word – One Relationship – An Incredible Privilege!
Abba (אַבָּא) – The Aramaic word for Father
Abba is not just an ordinary word as we might think. Many people teach that Abba means "Daddy," but that is not an exact translation of the original Aramaic word. Abba means Father. It was not exclusively a word used by little children; adults also used it when addressing their fathers.
The beauty of Abba is not that it is a baby word. The beauty is that the Holy God has given us the privilege of approaching Him as our Father through Jesus Christ!
What does Abba mean?
In Aramaic:
Ab (אַב) = Father
Abba (אַבָּא) = Father / the Father
Remember the difference:
Daddy describes an affectionate way of addressing a father.
Father describes the relationship itself.
Abba is the Aramaic word for Father, not a literal translation of Daddy.
Three important places where Abba appears in the Bible
1. Mark 14:36 – Jesus calls God Abba
"Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee..."
In the Garden of Gethsemane, even in His deepest suffering, Jesus approached God as His Father. He demonstrated complete trust and submission to the Father's will.
2. Romans 8:15 – We receive the Spirit of adoption
"...ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
We are no longer slaves living in fear. Through Jesus Christ, we receive the privilege of becoming God's children.
3. Galatians 4:6 – The Spirit cries Abba, Father
"God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father."
This is beautiful! God sends the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, enabling us to experience and express our relationship with Him as our Father.
What makes ABBA so powerful?
Look at this wonderful connection:
Jesus called God Abba (Mark 14:36).
We receive the privilege of crying Abba (Romans 8:15).
The Spirit of His Son cries Abba in our hearts (Galatians 4:6).
Jesus is the eternal Son of God. Through Him, we receive adoption into God's family.
The greatest revelation is not that we have learned a new word for God, but that God has given us a new relationship with Him!
Final Thought: What a privilege!
The power of ABBA is not that it means "Daddy."
The power is that the Almighty God, the Creator of heaven and earth, has given us the privilege of approaching Him as our Father through Jesus Christ.
The God whom angels worship, the God who created the universe, invites His adopted children into a personal relationship with Him.
We were once separated, but through Jesus Christ, we have been brought into His family!
❤️ What a privilege! What a relationship! What a loving Father!
ABBA, FATHER!
