Bible Study: The Word, the Cross, and the Life of Dominion

Introduction

From the very beginning, man was created by the Word of God and sustained by the Word of God. The purpose of God for mankind has always been that man would live in His image and likeness—walking in righteousness, holiness, dominion, and fellowship with Him.

But through sin, man fell from that original position. The gospel is God’s plan to restore man back to His original purpose through Jesus Christ.

This study explores:

  • The weakness of the flesh
  • The power of the spirit
  • The purpose of the Word of God
  • The sacrifice of Jesus Christ
  • The restoration of dominion through the gospel

1. The Flesh Is Weak, but the Spirit Must Rule

Matthew 26:41

“Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”

Jesus Himself spoke these words.

Man is made up of both flesh and spirit. The spirit desires to obey God, but the flesh resists the will of God. Many believers use this scripture as an excuse for disobedience, saying:

  • “God understands my weakness.”
  • “My flesh is weak.”
  • “Surely God will overlook it.”

But Jesus was not giving an excuse for sin. He was teaching a deeper truth.

The soul—the spirit man—was created to rule over the flesh. The real man is the soul, not the body.

Ezekiel 18:20

“The soul that sinneth, it shall die.”

The flesh will eventually return to dust, but the soul will stand before God in judgment. Therefore, the weakness of the flesh cannot become an excuse for disobedience.

The problem is not merely that the flesh is weak, but that the spirit has not yet become strong enough to subdue the flesh.

2. Jesus Overcame the Flesh Through Spiritual Strength

Jesus also had flesh. Before the cross, His flesh resisted suffering.

Matthew 26:39

“O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”

His flesh desired to avoid pain, yet His spirit remained submitted to the Father.

Why?

Because His spirit was stronger than His flesh.

Jesus overcame because He was spiritually strengthened and fully yielded to God.

This means believers also can overcome through the power of Christ within them.

3. Spiritual Strength Comes Through the Word of God

Christ strengthens the believer through the education of the Word of God.

The Word trains, equips, and empowers the spirit man.

Just as physical training strengthens the body, spiritual education strengthens the soul.

People say:

“Do not just give a man a fish; teach him how to fish.”

Education empowers a person for life. In the same way, the Word of God empowers believers to live the life of the Kingdom.

Knowledge is powerful. What a person does not understand can dominate them.

This is why many people see holiness, righteousness, and dominion as impossible—they lack spiritual empowerment through the Word.

But through continual teaching, study, prayer, and obedience, the believer grows strong enough to overcome sin and live according to God’s will.

4. Living for God Becomes Natural Through Spiritual Growth

When the life of Christ truly becomes your nature, obedience stops becoming a struggle.

A fish does not struggle to swim.
A bird does not struggle to fly.
A healthy tree does not struggle to bear fruit.

A mango tree naturally produces mangoes because it abides by the laws of its creation and remains connected to its source.

Likewise, believers must remain connected to Christ through the gospel and the Word of God.

John 15:5

“He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit.”

Outside the Word, a person cannot truly know God. Without knowing Him, transformation cannot happen.

5. Man Was Created for Dominion

Genesis 1:26

“Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion…”

Man was created:

  • In God’s image
  • In God’s likeness
  • With dominion, authority, and power

Man was designed to rule, overcome, and walk in righteousness.

The Kingdom life is a life of:

  • Holiness
  • Purity
  • Authority over sin
  • Fellowship with God

But this life cannot be lived without spiritual power.

6. Power Comes Through Receiving Christ

John 1:12

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”

Notice that believers are given power to become sons of God.

Who are the sons of God?

They are those who live like the Son.

This power comes through:

  • The Word of God
  • The gospel
  • Spiritual education
  • Fellowship with Christ

Through Christ, believers receive power to overcome temptation and walk in dominion.

1 John 4:4

“Greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Whenever a believer falls, it is often because spiritual growth is incomplete. Therefore, believers must continue growing in the Word.

7. Eternal Life Begins Now

John 17:3

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

Eternal life is not merely future existence in heaven.

Eternal life begins now through the knowledge of God.

As believers grow in knowing Christ, they begin to experience eternal life even while on earth.

8. Man Fell Through Disobedience to the Word

Genesis 2:16–17

“Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:
But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat…”

Man was created by the Word and sustained by the Word.

But in Genesis 3, man deviated from God’s command.

The result was:

  • Loss of dominion
  • Loss of authority
  • Separation from God
  • Spiritual death

Romans 3:23

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”

Man fell from the glory and image in which he was created.

9. Restoration Comes Through the Word

If something is broken, restoration must return to the original design.

What sustained man originally?

The Word of God.

Therefore, restoration must also come through the Word of God.

The apostles and faithful believers throughout history also had flesh, yet they overcame because they yielded themselves to God’s Word.

This means believers today are without excuse.

Without restoration through the Word:

  • Holiness becomes a mystery
  • Righteousness seems impossible
  • Dominion remains absent

But God has mercifully given His Word to restore man.

10. The Gospel Is God’s Rescue Plan

The gospel is God’s response to humanity’s cry for help.

Humanity is trapped in bondage to sin, but through Jesus Christ, God lowered a ladder of rescue.

That ladder is the gospel.

If a person is not ruling over sin, then sin is ruling over them.

There is no middle ground.

The gospel is the power of God to restore dominion, righteousness, and fellowship with Him.

11. The Gospel Reveals the Love of God

Romans 5:8

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

John 3:16

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son…”

The cross reveals the love of God.

John 15:13–14

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.”

Jesus died for the world, but only those who receive Him and obey Him truly benefit from His sacrifice.

12. The True Price Jesus Paid

Romans 6:23

“For the wages of sin is death.”

This death is spiritual separation from God.

Jesus bore the separation caused by humanity’s sin.

Throughout His ministry, Jesus declared:

“I and my Father are one.”

Yet on the cross, that fellowship was broken because He carried the sins of the world.

Matthew 27:46

“My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Jesus experienced the agony of separation from the Father so that humanity could be reconciled to God.

This was the true weight of the cross.

13. Grace Is Given for Transformation

Grace is not permission to continue in sin.

Grace was revealed through the cross so that believers could be transformed into the image of Christ.

The purpose of grace is:

  • Transformation
  • Holiness
  • Righteousness
  • Dominion over sin

Without embracing the cross and yielding to transformation, a person cannot truly live the Kingdom life.

Conclusion

Man was created by the Word, sustained by the Word, and restored through the Word.

Through Jesus Christ:

  • The believer receives power
  • The spirit is strengthened
  • The flesh can be overcome
  • Dominion is restored
  • Eternal life begins

The gospel is not merely information—it is God’s power to restore man to His original purpose.

Therefore:

  • Continue in the Word
  • Grow in the knowledge of Christ
  • Yield to spiritual education
  • Walk in holiness and obedience
  • Live the life of the Kingdom

For through Christ, the believer is empowered to overcome and live eternally with God.
