BIBLE STUDY: Are You Truly a Child of God?
🔹 1. The Foundational Question
The question seems simple:
“Are you a child of God?”
But this question is deep and weighty.
Being a child of God is:
- Not a label
- Not a feeling
- Not something you claim casually
It is a spiritual reality.
🔹 2. Key Scripture
📖 John 1:12–13
“But as many as received Him…
which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”
🔹 3. Two Types of Birth
🔸 Physical Birth
- Comes from blood (lineage)
- Comes from the flesh (natural desire)
- Comes from the will of man (human decision)
➡️ Result: You become a human being
➡️ Life: Physical life
🔸 Spiritual Birth
- Not from bloodline
- Not from human desire
- Not from human effort
➡️ Comes from God alone
➡️ Result: You become a child of God
➡️ Life: Spiritual life
🔹 4. Who Is a Child of God?
A child of God is:
- A repentant person or repented soul
- A born-again person
- One who has received the life of God
- One led by the Holy Spirit
👉 Without repentance, there is no foundation.
🔹 5. The Foundation: Repentance
📖 Message of Jesus:
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
🔑 What is repentance?
- Not just saying “sorry”
- Not just feeling bad
- It is:
- A turning away from sin
- A broken heart before God
- A complete surrender
🔹 6. Repentance as Soil Preparation 🌱
Jesus teaches that the heart is like soil.
The Heart = The Land
The Word of God = The Seed
🔸 Types of Hearts (Soil)
- Hard heart → cannot receive the Word
- Stony heart → no depth
- Divided heart → partial growth
- Good heart → produces fruit
🔹 7. The Process of Preparation
Just like farming, the heart must be prepared:
1. Clearing
- Removing sin, distractions, wrong influences
2. Separation
- Letting go of what is not of God
3. Cultivation
- Breaking, tilling, plowing the ground
🔹 8. The Key Word: Aeration
What is aeration?
- Loosening the soil so:
- Air can enter
- Water can flow
- Nutrients can reach roots
🔸 Spiritual Meaning
If the heart is:
- Hard
- Closed
- Divided
Then:
- The Word cannot go deep
- Growth is blocked
⚠️ Example of a Divided Heart
“Lord, take this… but leave that.”
- Partial surrender
- Selective repentance
- Hidden sin
➡️ This is not true repentance
🔹 9. True Repentance = Broken Heart
Repentance is:
- Breaking of the hardened heart
- Crushing of the stony heart
- Clearing of the thorny heart
- Melting of the Iron heart
📖 Psalm 51:17
“A broken and a contrite heart… Thou wilt not despise.”
🔹 10. Case Study: Adam & Eve vs David
🔸 Adam & Eve (Genesis 3)
- Sin: Disobedience
- Response:
- Hid from God
- Blamed others
- Covered sin
➡️ Result:
- Spiritual death
- Separation from God
🔸 David (2 Samuel 12, Psalm 51)
- Sin: Adultery and murder
- Response:
- Confessed sin
- Took responsibility
- Broken heart
➡️ Result:
- Forgiveness
- But consequences remained
🔹 11. Key Difference
| Adam & Eve | David |
|---|---|
| Hid sin | Confessed sin |
| Blamed others | Took responsibility |
| No brokenness | Broken heart |
| Separation | Restoration |
🔹 12. Important Truth
📖 “The wages of sin is death.”
- Sin always has consequences
- Even when forgiven
- God is merciful and just
🔹 13. True Repentance Produces:
- Confession
- Brokenness
- Humility
- Transformation
- New heart
📖 Psalm 51:10
“Create in me a clean heart, O God…”
🔹 14. Final Truth
👉 You cannot be a child of God without:
- Repentance
- New birth
- Transformation
🔹 15. Self-Examination Questions
Ask yourself:
- Have I truly repented?
- Is my heart fully surrendered?
- Am I hiding anything from God?
- Is my life transformed or just religious?
🔹 16. Final Summary
✔ Physical birth → makes you human
✔ Spiritual birth → makes you God’s child
✔ Repentance → prepares the heart
✔ Brokenness → allows transformation
✔ Confession → brings forgiveness
🔹 🔥 Closing Statement
A child of God is not someone who claims it—
It is someone who has been changed by God.
