Existing vs Living
Existing vs. Living (Physical Life)
-
Existing means to have breath, to survive, to be present.
Ex: People breathe, eat, work, sleep — but many simply exist. -
Living means to have purpose, meaning, joy, and fruitfulness.
Ex: A person who is truly alive uses their life to bless, create, love, and fulfill purpose.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” - Matthew 4:4
- Even in physical life, mere survival isn’t true living. Real life depends on God’s word and purpose.
Existing vs. Living (Spiritual Life)
In the spiritual life, many exist but few truly live.- They go to church.
- They read the Bible.
- They pray.
- But sometimes, these acts are mechanical, not transformational.
- You believe in God but remain in your old nature.
- There’s no change in character, no fruit, no transformation.
- You do religious acts, but your inner life is still ruled by the flesh.
“Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof.” — 2 Timothy 3:5
- That’s spiritual existence without life.
What It Means to Truly Live Spiritually
To live spiritually means the life of Christ flows in and through you.
It’s not just knowing about God, but being alive in God.
“It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20
You know you are living spiritually when:
-
Your desires begin to change.
You hunger for righteousness more than pleasure.
You begin to love what God loves and hate what God hates. -
The Word becomes life, not just text.
When you read the Bible, the words convict, guide, and feed your spirit. -
Prayer becomes communion, not just communication.
You’re not only talking to God, but hearing from Him — sensing His presence daily. -
Your spirit bears fruit.
“By their fruits you shall know them.” — Matthew 7:16
Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control begin to show (Galatians 5:22–23). -
You walk in obedience, not just emotion.
You don’t only feel close to God when it’s convenient; you walk in His will, even when it costs you something. -
You experience transformation.
Spiritual life brings growth — in understanding, holiness, and wisdom.
You are no longer tossed around by emotions or sin.
“The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing.” — John 6:63
“To be spiritually minded is life and peace.” — Romans 8:6
To truly live spiritually is when Christ’s life becomes your life —
you no longer just pray, but you commune;
you no longer just read, but you receive revelation;
you no longer just attend church, but you become the church.
“I have come that they may have life, and have it more abundantly.” — John 10:10
