Doubts and answers
Questions:
1 kings 13:11-32
I have more questions on the story.
1)Why did the old prophet lied and misguided the Man of God?
2)And then again in the verse 20, why the word of the LORD came to the prophet (the lied person)
3)In the verse 20 why the prophet said, lay my bones beside his bones.
4)Why Lion and donkey? Any significance?
Answers:
- If you read Numbers 22-24 you will find a similarities.
- Balaam was NOT a prophet of God yet he ended up speaking the Word of God.
- The “old prophet” in 1 Kings 13 is called a “prophet” yet he lied and
- yet, like Balaam, God used his mouth to speak His Word to the prophet who didn’t obey.
- There may have been some respect from the old “prophet”toward the younger real prophet
- because God used the younger prophet to prophesy against the altar in Samaria,
- the younger prophet did what the old “prophet” could never do.
- That may be why he wanted to be buried with him.
- He held him in honor.
- Remember also that the old “prophet” was in Bethel of Samaria where wicked Jeroboam was king.
- It was territory that worshipped the golden calves and shunned Judah and the Temple.
- It was idolatry and the old “prophet” probably lived a compromised life there and never spoke out against what Jeroboam allowed.
- Consider in John 11:47-52 that the wicked high priest Caiphas also prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation.
- He didn’t say that because he believed Jesus was going to die for our sins
- but because he thought it was better to kill Jesus than get in trouble with the Roman government, yet Scripture says he prophesied.
- God has used the ungodly to prophesy.
